Bangor University Health Academics appointed to new National body

Four leading health academics at Bangor University are among the first to be appointed Senior Faculty members of Wales’ new National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR). Their appointments were announced by Health Minister Mark Drakeford AM recently.

The Bangor Senior Faculty members are: Professor Linda Clare of the School of Psychology, a leading expert in Neuropsychology of memory and cognitive rehabilitation of memory disorders; Professor Rhiannon Tudor Edwards, a health economist who co-directs the University’s Centre for Health Economics and Medicines Evaluation; Professor Clare Wilkinson, who leads the North Wales Centre for Primary Care Research, which concentrates on health sciences research in musculoskeletal disorders and cancer in relation to primary care; and Professor Bob Woods, an expert in the care of people with dementia at the University’s Dementia Services Development Centre Wales.

“The appointments reflect the significant contribution to health and social care research in Wales made by academics across a wide range of disciplines at Bangor University. We look forward to our leading health researchers making a valuable contribution by sharing excellent practice and working with colleagues across Wales to support and promote collaborative research that contributes to improving health and social care for the benefit of the wider community,” said Prof David Shepherd, Deputy Vice Chancellor (Research & Enterprise).

The National Institute for Social Care and Health Research (NISCHR) is the Welsh Government body that develops, in consultation with partners, strategy and policy for research in the NHS and social care in Wales. The organisation’s goal is to fund today's research that will inform tomorrow's care and improve the health and wealth of the people of Wales.

The NISCHR Faculty was formally launched in April 2013 during the NISCHR Conference at the Cardiff City Stadium. The NISCHR Faculty has been created to enhance collaboration, provide leadership and give H&SC researchers in Wales a sense of community that will further stimulate a thriving research culture in Wales.
